Bregg is a second year Master of Science student in Environmental Health and Industrial Hygiene. He grew up in Northern New York and enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps following high school graduation. Sandar attended State University of New York (SUNY) Potsdam for a year and obtained his first research position working on transposable elements in E. coli populations. He transferred to Clarkson University and graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Environmental Health. During his time at Clarkson, he was hired by Yale University as a Research Study Coordinator for a NIOSH funded project focused on the use of in ear dosimetry at Alcoa's Massena, NY operations. Additionally, he was hired by Clarkson University to complete a New York State Energy Research and Development Authority funded project focused on the off-gassing of VOCs from bulk amounts of wood pellets in storage. His current research is focused on vibration exposure from small hand tools. Sandar is passionate about music, cultural issues, and making science more easily relatable to the general public.
Emily is pursuing a dual Masters in Environmental Health Sciences: MS in Industrial Hygiene, and MPH in Toxicology. She received a dual undergraduate degree from Calvin College with a BS in Biology, minor in Environmental Studies, and a BA in Spanish. She is involved with several student groups and volunteer organizations, such as La Salud and the Ecology Center, which focus on public health disparities within the community. Emily is currently interning at NSF International as the Toxicology Department intern. Some of her previous employers include the University of Michigan, the National Park Service, the US Fish and Wildlife Service, and the City of Grand Rapids Environmental Services. Emily is interested in global public health and is interested in pursuing a career in an international health organization such as the PAHO or WHO.
Katherine Galen is a second year Masters of Public Health Candidate in Industrial Hygiene. She is from Battle Creek, MI and received her Bachelor of Science degree in Biopsychology, Cognition, and Neuroscience from the University of Michigan in 2016. Throughout her undergraduate degree, Katherine explored the field of public health through volunteer positions, health research positions, and coursework. Her experiences strengthened her passion for public health, specifically in the realm of global health with a focus on injury prevention and disability rights. During the summer of 2017, Katherine completed her internship in Santiago, Chile where she worked on a collaborative research project between the University of Michigan, Universidad de Chile, and the Universidad de Santiago de Chile. She served as a research coordinator in the planning and execution of the project that focused on the public health impacts of informal electronic waste recycling in Santiago and Temuco, Chile. With the help of a team, Katherine conducted area air samples, personal noise measurements, surface wipe samples, heart rate monitoring, and observational ergonomic assessments with the participants during their work day. She will assist in analyzing the results to identify a solution to improve the safety of informal electronic waste recycling. With a degree in Industrial Hygiene, Katherine hopes to pursue a career that combines her interests in global occupational health, injury prevention, and disability rights.
Andrea Guytingco is a second year Masters of Public Health candidate in Industrial Hygiene. She is originally from Mount Pleasant, Michigan and completed her undergraduate education in 2015 at the University of Michigan School of Kinesiology with a Bachelor of Science in Movement Science. In the summer of 2015, Andrea worked as an intern with Health Poverty Action (HPA), a non-profit organization based in London, England, which works to improve local policies and practices, educate communities on topics such as sanitation and water safety, and strengthen health services in 12 different countries across Africa, Asia, and Latin America. From May through August 2017, Andrea interned in Thailand, working with the Sirindhorn College of Public Health in Trang, Chulalongkorn University in Bangkok, and Mae Fah Luang University in Chiang Rai. Her work in Thailand focused on occupational risk assessment, ergonomic evaluation, and environmental sampling in relation to agricultural workers and their pesticide exposure. She also participated in field work assessing the risks and hazards associated with electronic waste recycling in Northeastern Thailand. With a degree in Industrial Hygiene, Andrea hopes to contribute to safer working conditions and limit workplace exposures with a focus on global occupational health and sustainable practice.
Allyson O'Connell is a first year M.P.H. student in Industrial Hygiene. Allyson graduated from Grand Valley State University with a double major in Occupational Safety and Health Management and Allied Health Sciences. This past year Allyson interned at Perrigo Company as the Environmental Health and Safety Student Associate focusing in Industrial Hygiene. During her time at Perrigo, Allyson conducted air and noise sampling, assisted in analyzing the results and provided recommendations to the site based on results. She also assisted in laboratory safety inspections and conducted laser safety assessments on class 4 lasers. Allyson also previously interned with Domino's where she conducted ergonomic evaluations, researched new training programs, and analyzed injury data to identify trends and patterns.
Outside of school, Allyson enjoys being outside, spending time with her friends and family, and walking her dog.
Anthony Oliveri is a second-year Master of Public Health student in the Industrial Hygiene program. He is from Crystal Lake, Il, and attended Grinnell College in Iowa, graduating in 2009 with a Bachelor of Arts in Biology with a concentration in Neuroscience. After spending two years as a research assistant at the University of Iowa, he entered the Integrated Toxicology and Environmental Health program at Duke University, developing and utilizing behavioral screens to assay the neurotoxicity of a variety of chemicals. He completed his PhD in the Department of Pharmacology and Cancer Biology in the summer of 2016. During the summer of 2017, he worked as an industrial hygiene intern in the Division of Occupational and Environmental Medicine at Michigan State University, working on multiple projects such as the investigation of workplace fatalities, the surveillance of farm-related injuries, and the creation of training materials regrading respirator use and hazard communication. By combining his background in toxicology with training in industrial hygiene, Anthony looks forward to a career ensuring the safety and health of workers in hazardous industries.
Taylor Tarpey is a second year M.P.H. student in Industrial Hygiene. Taylor grew up in Eastpointe, MI and graduated from the University of Michigan with a Bachelor of Science degree in Neuroscience in 2015. During her junior and senior years at the University of Michigan, Taylor assisted a research team in behavioral and social experimentation involved in genetic changes in Alzheimer's disease and other neurodegenerative diseases. Taylor discovered a passion for public health in her senior year at Michigan and decided to pursue an MPH during her gap year. During her first M.P.H year, Taylor became the secretary of the University of Michigan Industrial Hygiene Student Association where she assisted during bi-weekly meetings and co-chaired a city-wide charity scavenger hunt. Taylor spent the summer of 2017 in Chicago, IL interning for Cardno ChemRisk, an environmental consulting firm. There, she offered litigation support conducting case summaries and performed various research tasks to support expert witnesses and project managers. Research tasks included using scholarly databases to investigate exposure assessment, risk assessment, toxicology and industrial hygiene literature pertaining to case materials. Her focus over the course of the internship encompassed an exposure assessment of peracetic acid, a common disinfectant, and its use in occupational settings. Outside of academics, Taylor enjoys Michigan sports, trying new restaurants and beers, and spending time with family and friends.
Emmanuel Zervoudakis is a first year student in the Master of Public Health in Industrial Hygiene program and is originally from Grand Rapids, MI. Emmanuel graduated from the University of Notre Dame in 2007 with a Bachelor of Science in Environmental Sciences. Upon graduation, he was commissioned in the U.S. Navy where he served as a Surface Warfare Officer on USS BLUE RIDGE (LCC-19, forward-deployed to Yokosuka, Japan) and as the first Navigator of USS WILLIAM P LAWRENCE (DDG 110). In these roles, he was privileged to work alongside many dedicated sailors who provided him invaluable leadership experiences, as well as taught him real-world applications, and implications, of many IH practices.
Emmanuel left active duty in February 2012 and spent a year exploring his personal interests, including road trips, hiking, sailing, and international travel and service.
In 2013 Emmanuel moved to New Orleans, LA, where he taught high school science and math, ran local human resources operations for a farm-to-doorstep grocery delivery service, distilled rum, and moonlighted as a film extra for Jurassic World and NCIS.
While at Michigan, Emmanuel hopes to integrate and expound upon these experiences in pursuit of a career serving at-risk workers.
Benjamin Moore is a second-year Master of Public Health candidate studying Industrial Hygiene. Prior to attending U of M, Benjamin was awarded a Bachelor of Science degree from the University of North Alabama where he graduated Magna Cum Laude, duel majoring in Chemistry and Industrial Hygiene. Professional aspirations include becoming both a Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH) and a Certified Safety Professional (CSP). Over the summer, Benjamin completed a fourteen-week internship with Chevron at one of their largest oil refineries located in Pascagoula Mississippi. During his time at the refinery he conducted workplace exposure assessments to characterize and quantify exposures to chemical and physical hazards, developed high detail noise maps to verify and update hearing protection requirements for process areas, and conducted hazard communication audits to ensure regulatory compliance. Benjamin grew up in Loretto, TN and is the first in his immediate family to pursue a college degree. Outside of academia, Benjamin enjoys weightlifting and playing the occasional game of soccer. He also loves to take road trips to the mountains where he takes part in activities such as camping and hiking.
Yonas Abebe is a third year graduate student within the University of Michigan School of Public Health. He is pursuing an MPH in Industrial Hygiene and Environmental Quality & Health. He also received a BS in Biology at the University of Michigan. Currently, Yonas is working with the City of Ann Arbor Safety Unit helping support their occupational health and safety programs. Last year, Yonas worked with the Huron River Watershed Council and helped collect data on the tributaries that feed into the Huron River. Finally, Yonas hopes to create an impact on occupational and environmental issues in the future through either industry or the government.
My name is Luyi Li. I come from China. I am currently a second-year master student studying Industrial Hygiene in the Department of Environmental Health Science, School of Public Health. I have a bachelor’s degree in Safety Engineering from China University of Petroleum. I went on an internship to a refinery in Beijing during the summer of 2015 and got several risk identification experience. I received the HAZOPER training from Michigan State Police and got some hands-on experience. My career goal is to become a professional CIH and CSP.
I love cooking and playing basketball. During my free time, I always make food for my friends and all of my friends call me Chef Li.
