Our new unit of study in writing is fiction. Students are writing realistic fiction and you may see some more writing homework coming home in the next few weeks. At first we're focusing on story ideas. These can be short summaries of a story idea, for example: A fourth grade boy likes to watch sports but has always been afraid to try to play himself. He is kind of clumsy but tries anyway. He makes it on to a team and after practicing a lot makes an important play that wins the game. That's fine for a story starter, we would work later to create various character traits for the person, as well as developing a setting and any other characters. This unit will involve a lot of writing, more so than most other units. The revision process in fiction writing will be the primary activity.
