Marmites Activity

What is Marmite made of?

Marmite is a yeast extract. The yeast is concentrated and combined with our secret blend of herbs and spices in a process that develops the unique Marmite flavour, colour and texture that Kiwi’s have come to love.

What are the ingredients in Marmite?

Marmite contains yeast, sugar, salt, mineral salt (potassium chloride), colour (caramel III), corn maltodextrin, mineral (iron), vitamins (niacin, thiamin, riboflavin, folate, B12), herbs, spices.

What happened to the Marmite factory after the 2011 Christchurch Earthquake?

Sadly, the February 2011 earthquake caused lots of damage to the Marmite factory in Christchurch. Upon receiving advice of structural engineers, the factory in Papanui, Christchurch was immediately closed. It took just over a year to get the factory and machinery repaired.

During this time we looked at making Marmite elsewhere in the world but soon realised that nobody could make Marmite to the tried and true recipe that our trusted people in Christchurch could achieve. The great Marmite drought of 2012 brought out the best in Kiwis - they declared their support for the brand, joined the Marmite Facebook page which was set up to keep consumers informed and they waited patiently for Marmite’s return on March 20th 2013.
