Addition/ Subtraction
Walt: Use more than one strategy to solve number problems
Strategies that we have learned:
Place Value: Adding the tens and adding the ones
Example: Shelley has 38 marbles and collects another 25 more. How many does she have altogether? 30+20=50, 8+5=13, 50+13=63
Tidy Numbers: Take 2 from 25 and add it to the 38 to make 40 (a tidy ten). 25-2=23, so add 40+23=63
Equal Addition: David has $85. He bought a pair of new shoes that cost $28. How much money does he have left?
Add 2 to 28 to make 30. Remember: what you add to one side you must to another. This only works, when the number being subtracted ends with 7, 8 or 9.
Add 2 to 85 to make 87. So, 87-30=57. So the answer is: 57
Reversibility: Instead of subtracting - ADD
28+ __=85
28+7=35
35+50=85 the answer is 57. The numbers are in the middle.
Addition/ Subtraction
Walt: Add and subtract in parts to solve number problems
Tidy Tens: 10, 20, 30, 40, 50, 60, 70, 80, 90, 100.. any number that ends with zero (0)
Example:
Teija has 36 marbles. She wins 5 more at school. How many marbles does she have altogether?
Split 5 into 4 and 1. Add 4 to 36 to make it 40 (a tidy ten) then add the 1 so the answer is 41.
