9/2 WEDNESDAY 9/3 THURSDAY What is a system? ENGAGE:

Systems Probe --- What do you know about systems?

What is a system? Where have you heard this term before?

Discussion... Come up with a working, classroom definition of a system. EXPLORE:

Create an annotated drawing of the school system activity HOMEWORK (period 3 and 5): Vocabulary Card Activity --> Word on one side, drawing on the other

connection --- logical relationship, being related of linked

system --- a group of parts that interact to perform a function

interaction --- an influence, one part affects another

WARM UP: Click on one of the images to the right. Try to explain what the image shows to your neighbor!

EXPLAIN: Earth is a System

NOTES: What are the different spheres? Why are the spheres separated the way that they are?

Open The Earth as a System

HOMEWORK:

Vocabulary --- WORD AND DRAWING ON INDEX CARDS

Earth Systems --- the interconnecting web of physical and biological phenomena that includes the various Earth Spheres

Lithosphere - Geosphere --- The Earth's solid surface, includes continental and oceanic crust as well as the different layers of the Earth's interior

Biosphere --- All life on Earth including man, the life zone on our planet distinguishes our planet from the others in the solar system

Hydrosphere --- All of the water on Earth

Atmosphere --- A gaseous sphere that envelopes (surrounds) the Earth consisting of a mixture of gases, primarily nitrogen, oxygen, carbon dioxide, and water vapor.

Cryosphere --- part of the hydrosphere, the portion of the Earth's surface where water is in a solid form. Snow or ice, includes glaciers, snow, icebergs, and even frozen tundra.

Anthrosphere --- Man and his direct ancestors, hominids, the human population, its buildings, dams, and other constructions.

Cosmosphere --- Space and all that is in space
