These are sample answers. You may have different answers that are also correct!
1. Define a system. Use any and all appropriate terms to help define this.
A system is a group of parts that interact to perform a function.
2. List at least three characteristics that all systems have in common, whether they are living or nonliving.
All systems have inputs that contribute (give something) to the system.
They have outputs that come away from a system.
They have boundaries or edges that we set.
They have parts or components.
They have or perform a function.
3. Give an example of a system that contains a subsystem, and is also a part of a larger system. What makes each of these (the system, subsystem, and larger system) a system?
The school system is an example of a system. Some subsystems in the school system could be the administration, the teachers, the transportation system, and the students. The school system is also part of our community which is larger than just the school system.
4. What are the 6 + 1 spheres? How do they relate to the idea of a system?
Biosphere
Atmosphere
Hydrosphere
Lithosphere
Cryosphere
Anthrosphere
Cosmosphere
Each sphere is its own system with parts that interact. Each sphere also interacts with the other spheres providing inputs and outputs for each. For example, the biosphere includes all living creatures. The plants give off (output) oxygen that becomes and input for the atmosphere. Each sphere belongs to the greater Earth system.
