14. International efforts in mitigating climate change
What are the different levels can we look to in response to impacts brought about by climate change?
Your teacher will show you a video on the Kyoto Protocol.
Learning points:
• The Kyoto Protocol is an international agreement linked to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change. The Kyoto Protocol was adopted in Kyoto, Japan, on 11 December 1997 and entered into force on 16 February 2005.
• The major feature of the Kyoto Protocol is that it sets binding targets for 37 industrialized countries and the European community for reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. Recognizing that developed countries are principally responsible for the current high levels of GHG emissions in the atmosphere as a result of more than 150 years of industrial activity, the Protocol places a heavier burden on developed nations under the principle of “common but differentiated responsibilities.”
Watch the video below how the Kyoto Protocol works and how the Clean Development Mechanism help to reduce carbon emission.
Watch from 3.0 mins to 5.20 mins on how the Clean Development Mechanism help to reduce carbon emission.
How successful is the Kyoto Protocol in mitigating climate change?
How can the industrialised countries meet their target of cutting their carbon emission by 5% of 1990 level?
Watch the video below to understand how the UN distribute carbon units to help limit carbon emission of countries which had signed the agreement?
