What are some similarities and differences in the coastal environments?

What do you think causes the differences in the coastal environments?

Can you give me examples of places which have similar coastal environments as shown in the photographs?

Why do you think we are looking at photographs of different coastal environments?

Changi beach is a popular place for beach and water activities for many. However, the waves are strong and coastal erosion has taken place.

The Changi beach is a place where many families visit to relax and take part in water activities.

However, the coastal land is so badly eroded that it will give way soon.

Sand bags have been placed to protect it from erosion. How effective do you think this will be?

The erosion is so bad that the roots of trees are exposed.

Seawall protecting the another stretch of the coastal land and chalet behind it in Changi. However, you can still see the erosion at work in the foreground.

Look at the coastal erosion threatening the footpath behind it.

Weep holes on the seawall to allow the ground water to be drained so that the soil will not be too saturated and put pressure on the wall and damaging it.

Reflect on

· Who is responsible for the changes?

· What is the interrelationship between man and the coastal environment?

· Are the changes good or bad? Why?

· What do you think the coastline looked like 50 years ago?

· What might happen in 50 years time?
