A personal narrative is a short, true story drawn from the writer's life. It can describe important, life-changing events; small moments in the student's life; or anything in between. They key to writing a good narrative is to use strong descriptive detail so that the reader feels like a part of the story. Personal narratives typically include:
a strong lead sentence or lead paragraph to grab the reader's attention,
transition words such as "later that day," "afterwards," and "suddenly,"
dialogue,
strong verbs (such as "peered" instead of "looked"),
strong adjectives and other descriptors, and
a lesson or other summarizing statement at the end to make the narrative feel finished.
