Once the class has had a lot of practice with numbers up to the millions, they must learn how to write the numbers in word form. Being able to say the numbers is the first step, and students begin again with the place-value charts.
The hardest part is combining periods. (Millions period, thousands period, units period.) Each period is set off by commas when you write it, and pauses when you speak it. The number above reads “nine million, seven hundred thirty-eight thousand, one hundred forty-two.” Finally, of course, students write the numbers.
*Note: We never use the word ‘AND’ when we speak or write about integers. The word ‘AND’ only refers to the decimal point in decimal fractions.
We also practice writing word form from standard form. (Standard form is the “normal” way to write numbers.)
For example: “Write the following number in word form: 4,501,587”
