Place Value Understanding

Fourth grade goals:

• Recognize that in a multi-digit whole number, a digit in one place represents 10 times what it represents in the place to the right.

• Read and write multi-digit whole numbers in standard form, word form, and expanded form.

• Compare two multi-digit whole numbers using the symbols =, <, or >.

• Round multi-digit whole numbers to any place.

When students begin fourth grade:

• • Students should be able to list the order of places from the ones place to the thousands place.

  • Students should be able to round numbers to the nearest 10 or 100.
