Students get a new homework packet every week.

How do the homework packets work?
Every week, students will take home homework packets. These pages include only practice activities. The packets are not graded, but I do check them every morning for completion and accuracy. Students should spend less than 30 minutes on homework each night. Remember, these packets are only meant to be practice! Students should be able to complete them quickly and independently. Please contact me if this is not the case.
If students forget to bring their homework packets to school, I DO NOT expect parents to bring the packets to school for them. A big fourth grade goal is to be responsible about homework. Instead, students stay in for recess and redo the work on a new packet.
Why are there poems in the homework packets?
Research has shown that the more children read a text, the more fluent they become. To practice fluency, students learn a new poem every week. At school the class discusses the poem's meaning and analyzes the way the poet crafted it. At home, students read the poem out loud with expression three times per night. As you might expect, students become quite fluent in a short amount of time! Encourage students to use expression and think about the meaning of the poem as they read it.
Students can read the poem to anyone: a parent, a grandparent, a CLC helper, a brother or sister, even the pet dog! Once the student has read the poem, the listener can express his or her appreciation and sign the back of the homework sheet. Reading the poem counts as a homework assignment.
