Students generally begin the year with a good understanding of how to compare numbers. In fourth grade, we simply work with larger numbers.
The first way we compare large numbers is to line them up on a place value chart. Looking at the two numbers from the largest place first, it’s easy to see which number is larger.
Answer: 6,738,142 < 6,783,421
Once students have used the place value chart, they simply practice stacking the numbers on top of each other to compare them:
"Compare 3,028,001 and 328,001."
3,028,001
328,001
Answer: 3,028,001 > 328,001
