Teaching/reviewing the concept of multiplication
Concrete: students use various objects (dried beans, tiles, etc.) to explore/review the “grouping” idea of multiplication (Jo had 3 colors of jelly beans. He had 4 green, 4 orange, and 4 red. How many jelly beans did Jo have in all?)
Pictorial: students draw groups (usually squares or circles); often called the “make groups” multiplication strategy
Abstract: students add groups of numbers (also called the “repeat addition” multiplication strategy). Relate the concrete, pictorial and abstract steps to multiplication number sentences. (4 x 3 = 12) Introduce vocabulary: “factors” (4 and 3) and “product” (12).
Making Groups strategy
5 x 7 means five groups of seven smileys
5 x 7 also means five groups of seven
"Repeat Addition" multiplication strategy
5 x 7 means 7 + 7 + 7 + 7 + 7
