Expanded Form

Expanded form breaks it into its separate parts.  After using place-value charts and discs so much, this step usually comes fairly naturally.

Next, students use place-value charts and standard form:

Finally, students write from standard form to expanded form without the place-value charts.  “Write the following number in expanded form: 6,738,142.”
