Nonfiction picture books are essentially research projects with a unique presentation. Students begin their books by researching a topic that interests them, narrowing their topic down, and taking notes from multiple sources. This process can take a long time since fourth-grade students are not usually used to doing research. Students then continue through the writing process of drafting , revising, and re-drafting. Finally they transfer their information into nonfiction picture book format. These books generally include most of these characteristics:
a cover page,
a table of contents,
headings,
organized paragraphs,
vocabulary words in bold font,
a glossary,
photographs and diagrams (taken from the internet),
picture captions,
fast facts,
an index, and
a Sources page (or bibliography).
