READ FIRST: Undergraduates contribute to our research in various ways. For example, some positions focus on animal behavior while others focus on computational analysis. We do not always have availability for new students in all areas of the lab. You are STRONGLY encouraged to write to Dr. Newman (ehnewman@IU.edu) to check if there are positions available that are of interest to you before writing the essay below.
Hot tip: We are much more likely to have a position available for someone seeking specific experiences that will directly benefit their long-term career goals that we are uniquely able to provide than we are to have a position suitable for someone with indistinct or poorly articulated interests or goals. Thus, be sure to communicate relevant details when you reach out to check about current availability.
To apply to join the lab:
All applicants to work in the lab must submit a 2-3 page personal statement addressing the following questions:
Why have you chosen to conduct research, as opposed to the myriad other extra-curricular activities you could do?
What specific academic / career goals will this experience help you to achieve?
What tangible outcomes will allow us to know if you are achieving your goals?
Why this lab in particular?
What relevant experience and skills, if any, do you have?
Once complete, submit your responses to ehnewman@IU.edu. I've received your statement, we can set up a time to meet and discuss your goals and possible fit to the lab directly!
