We place various objects into the brain and sometimes need to protect part of these objects from being potentially crushed by acrylic when it is hardened.
Some times we use Qwik-sil or for drives specifically we use artificial dura. But for optical fibers we generally use a 1:1 mixture of bone wax and mineral oil
To make this mixture take a petri dish and drop one of the sterilized packs of bone wax which is 2.5 grams then add 2.5 grams worth of mineral oil. This mixture will mix when it boils in the autoclave.
To autoclave this material, place it in its own autoclave pouch and place it on the bottom tray of the autoclave the mixture tends to spill out a little when it is boiling in the pouch.
To apply it to optical fiber or any other object use the cauterizer and pick up a small amount of it and melt it onto the object being careful not to drop the hot mixture onto the brain.Â
