Welcome to second grade! Your child will be given every opportunity to grow academically, socially, physically, and spiritually in my classroom this year. Please read the important “FYI’s” about our procedures and routines.

Classroom Management

Expectations are posted in the classroom and are thoroughly reviewed with the students. A positive discipline strategy involving a leveled clip chart will provide a visual reminder to help students track their own progress.

Each student begins the day with a clip, which is labeled with the child’s classroom number and is positioned at the edge of the green Ready to Learn level of the chart. During the course of the day, the clip moves up and down the chart based upon the behavioral choices each student makes. Positive behavior causes the clip to move up one level, while inappropriate behavior causes the clip to move down one level.

To monitor your child’s behavior progress, a chart will be sent home each day that is color-coded to match the behavior level your child attained. Parents should initial the chart daily.

Positive Behavior Store/Incentives

Students earn positive behavior coins (pennies, nickels, dimes, and quarters) to purchase items in our “Positive Behavior Store.” Coins are earned by returning signed clip charts and homework, following directions, treating classmates kindly, helping others, etc. Students collect their coins in a special money pouch and learn to add and count back change when making purchases at our store. Donations to the store are greatly appreciated!

In addition, the class works together to exhibit positive behavior to “earn” letters to spell the name of an incentive reward (i.e. extra recess, game day, music day, movie day etc.). The class will receive the incentive reward once all of the letters are earned to spell the name of the reward.

Red Homework Folder/Assignment Sheet

Your child will bring home the red plastic communicator folder labeled “Homework/Note Folder” each day. Each afternoon, your child’s papers from the entire day will be sent home in the red folder on the side labeled “Leave at Home.” Please remove and review the papers and send the folder back to school the following day.Any parent signature papers should be returned in this folder the next day. Each Monday, your child will be given an assignment sheet with homework assignments, test dates, and any special information pertaining to that particular week. Spelling and vocabulary words are listed on the reverse side.Your child should keep the sheet in the front pocket of the Red Homework/Note Folder each day.

Spelling Tests

Students will be given a pre-test for spelling each Monday. Those who spell all the pretest words correctly will be given an alternate challenge word spelling list.

Social Studies

My class will go to Mrs.Wilkinson’s classroom for Social Studies while I teach Science to her students.

Birthdays

Birthdays will be celebrated each month with a combined celebration on a predetermined day. I will contact you via Jupiter to assign peanut and nut free treats.

Volunteers

Volunteers are always welcome in the classroom! (Please refer to the sheet sent with the summer letter.)All classroom and field trip volunteers are required by the Archdiocese of Indianapolis to complete the Safe and Sacred Training, which can be accessed online via the Holy Family Website.

Snacks and Water Bottles

Students may bring insulated water bottles so that they can keep hydrated throughout the day. Help your child choose a healthy, peanut and nut free snack for the morning and afternoon breaks.

Classroom Website

Each Monday students and parents should visit the 2A classroom website for classroom news and to discover the “secret word.” The secret word should be recorded on the back of the assignment sheet to receive Positive Behavior Store money.

Technology

Digital resources and assignments are a vital component of our Reading, Math, and Science curriculum. Important instructions for accessing these websites with usernames and passwords will be sent home the first week of school. Please add shortcuts and/or bookmarks to your home computers and devices so that your child can easily log on to complete homework assignments. If you need assistance with this, do not hesitate to ask me for help.

Students may bring their personal iPads, iPods, and tablets for educational useatdesignated times during the school day. Devices will be stored near the teacher’s desk during school hours when they are not in use. Devices will be sent home each afternoon.
