The Great Kindness Challenge

This week HFS students are participating in the Great Kindness Challenge. This is a campaign across the USA to promote a culture of kindness. In 2017, over 10 million students, 15 thousand schools, and 90 countries committed 500 million acts of kindness. This year HFS joined the cause. However, we just didn't want to make it one week. We decided to implement this theme throughout the year. As you may recall, the students decorated bags for the homeless, made rocks for the Kindness Garden, and collected hats & gloves for the homeless. This week the students are challenged to do as many acts of kindness as possible. To help with this, the students were given a checklist today. Once the students complete a suggested activity on the list, they will mark it off of the list. If they do an act of kindness that isn't on the list, they will write what they did on the back. Just think, if just each student in 2A does 50 acts of kindness, that's 850 acts of kindness!! That's not even taking into account the ripple effect. Thanks for encouraging your child to do his/her part. Students are asked to return their checklists on Friday the 26th of January. Students that complete the checklist will receive a non-uniform day on February the 9th. On Wednesday, the first and second students will rotate to the other first and second grade classes to learn about kindness and to make some cards for the local community.

Polar Bear S.T.E.M. Challenge

Students were challenged to construct a polar bear den with 4 sides and a door large enough for their polar bear to fit through. Toothpicks and two sizes of marshmallows were the materials used for the Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math project.
