Chrome Books and the Transition from Primary to High School
This year my son transitioned from Kingussie Primary School to the High School; and I am delighted that his experience has been and continues to be extremely positive. He is enjoying enormously the new challenges in learning offered by more specialised subject provision. A key aspect of his embracing all that the High School has to offer has been the continued use of Chrome Books for learning and teaching, and these were introduced towards the end of his final year at Primary School.
The Chrome Books were met with much excitement from the children, and P7 was really concerned with learning how to use them effectively and creatively. The fact that the children received the same Chrome Book to use in High School gave a valuable sense of continuity in the transition between stages. I can see that the orientation work at the Primary level is now bearing fruit, as the children are very comfortable using them in a variety of ways. Most recently, French lessons have been enlivened by accessing the Duolingo website from the Chrome Books.
This is an excellent example of the value of the Chrome Books, as children can access the website from home on another device and continue where they left off, as well as accessing work saved to the Google Drive at school. This flexibility adds a valuable dynamic to teaching and learning, allowing for greater continuity between home and school, and even letting parents see what is going on! I am extremely impressed by this innovation, which must also benefit those pupils with additional support needs, and I look forward to hearing about the next exciting use of the Chrome Books.
