This week we made a change to the desktop / screen on the Chromebooks. We 'pinned' Google Classroom to the bottom so that it is permanently accessible and more importantly prominently displayed. The pupils are already asking 'What's this?!' A few Highland teachers not in the pilot are beginning to explore this and seeing the positive results. The Teachers in the pilot are now starting to take small steps with it. UPDATE (October 2015) We now have over 600 classrooms in Highland. We have also created our very own simple guide to getting going here.
Google Classroom is best explained here on this page or short clip. and this introduction here.
In simple terms - Classroom is designed to help teachers create and collect assignments paperlessly, including time-saving features such as the ability to automatically make a copy of a Google Document for each student. It also creates Drive folders for each assignment and for each student to help keep everyone organised.
Students can keep track of what’s due on the Assignments page and begin working with just a click. Teachers can quickly see who has or hasn't completed the work, and provide direct, real-time feedback and marks from within Classroom.
For our Highland Google Apps for Education Domain, there is a Google Group for Teachers that enables Classroom to identify that the user is indeed a Teacher. If you wish to be added please contact Louise or Andy. Please note, the Classroom shows the teacher by full name, some teachers would prefer not to show their first name, it is possible to change this to an initial or a prefix such as Mrs or Mr. This is at the discretion of the teacher of course, some prefer to have their full name.
