Qualifying Event - Throughout the year, you may have a life event that warrants a change to your insurance coverage, i.e. Getting married to add a spouse, having a baby, adopting a child, loss of current coverage, dependent losing coverage, or a divorce. In addition, being hired into a benefits eligible position also counts as a qualifying event. You MUST apply within 30 days of the event or you will have to wait for the October Open Enrollment.
Age 26 child aging off of plan - NYSHIP and HIP will cover your dependent child until the end of the month they turn age 26 (regardless of student or marital status). Only NYSHIP offers Young Adult coverage for unmarried dependents of NYSHIP policy holders. Coverage would be through age 29 only. This is their own individual policy at full cost (about $1,345 per month). If your child is disabled, you may petition NYSHIP for them to remain on the policy.
