The Wizard of Oz is a 1939 adaptation of one of Frank L. Baum's novels (there are several novels set in the land of Oz if you have not read them yet). This type of storytelling was very popular from the 1930's through the 1960's as it coincided with the type of theater productions that the audience would be familiar with or have experience seeing on the stage.
