Objective: Set a SMART student learning goal
Purpose: Now that the team has identified a Learner-Centered Problem and a Problem of Practice, the team will name their goal for student learning outcomes that will result from this inquiry cycle. The Student Learning Goal will anchor the team’s efforts and should directly connect to the team’s end of cycle assessment.
Recommended time: 15-30 minutes
Preparation: It can be helpful to share the Setting Student Learning Goals document ahead of time for the team to read. Determine the medium you’d like to use when brainstorming Student Learning Goals as a team: chart paper, google doc, whiteboard, post its, etc.
Objective: Set SMART student learning goals for focus students
Purpose: Now that the team has identified a Learner-Centered Problem and a Problem of Practice specific to your focus students, the team will name their goal for student learning outcomes that will result from this inquiry cycle. The Student Learning Goal will anchor the team’s efforts and should directly connect to the team’s end of cycle assessment.
Recommended time: 25-35 minutes
Preparation: With the focus on goal writing, you can best prepare by engaging in this activity with your own focus students to note potential challenges that might come up with goal writing. It could be beneficial to revisit and reflect on the team’s experience when naming a Learner-Centered Problem with focus students to inform this process.
Objective: Set a SMART teacher practice goal
Purpose: Now that the team has identified a Learner-Centered Problem, Student Learning Goal, Problem of Practice, and a New Instructional Approach, the team will name their goal for shifts in teacher practice that will result from this inquiry cycle. While the Student Learning Goal will anchor the team’s efforts and should directly connect to the team’s end of cycle assessment, a Teacher Practice Goal will make clear the ambitious shifts in practice the team hopes to make to impact student learning. This goal should be directly tied to the implementation indicators the team has developed for the New Instructional Approach.
Recommended time: 15-30 minutes
Preparation: A Teacher Practice Goal is best to name after the team has developed implementation indicators for the New Instructional Approach as the implementation indicators will provide specific moves that will elevate instructional practice. As with setting Student Learning Goals, determine the medium you’d like to use when brainstorming goals as a team: chart paper, google doc, whiteboard, post its, etc.
