College Algebra with Support

NCBM 0214 / MATH 1314

NCBM 0244 / MATH 1414

This page covers the following course pairings:

MATH 1314 corequisite with NCBM 0214

A path to complete developmental math requirements and College Algebra in one semester

MATH 1414 corequisite with NCBM 0244

A path to complete developmental math requirements and College Algebra for Precalculus in one semester

What are these course pairings all about?

These course pairings provide students a path to finish their developmental algebra coursework and College Algebra or College Algebra for Precalculus in one semester. Students take the MATH credit course, which is paired with a two-hour support course (NCBM 0214 or NCBM 0244). Because the support course runs concurrently with College Algebra, students are expected to complete weekly lessons over several due dates throughout the semester. During the support course, students will have a math instructor for assistance with the lessons.

Meeting Times

Students enrolled in College Algebra with Support (NCBM 0214 / MATH 1314) will attend class 5 hours a week with the support course meeting before or after the paired College Algebra course.   The classes may also be schedule on consecutive days at the same time/place.

Students enrolled in College Algebra for Precalculus with Support (NCBM 0244 / MATH 1414) will attend class 6 hours a week with the support course meeting before or after the paired College Algebra for Precalculus course.  The classes may also be schedule on consecutive days at the same time/place.

Who Would be a Good Fit for these Course Pairings?

Students must be able to commit to attending all class meetings and compete assignments for both courses on time.  This translates into approximately 15 to 20 hours per week for NCBM 0214 with MATH 1314 and approximately 18 to 24 hours per week for NCBM 0244 with MATH 1414.

There is a Prerequisite Review for these course pairings. Use this to test your background knowledge.

ALEKS Sections

What is Expected in the Support Course?

In the support course, students take an assessment in ALEKS and complete a customized path through their remaining developmental algebra topics (lessons). Students are required to complete approximately 20 topics every week, depending on the course calendar. The topics in ALEKS are prerequisite topics needed to remediate students section-by-section in time for their College Algebra or College Algebra for Precalculus lectures. Students have a minimum weekly progress requirement in ALEKS and must attend all classes. There is an opportunity to work through the ALEKS support topics faster and hence use the required time in class for College Algebra homework support as well. Review of content already discussed in the MATH course may also be conducted in preparation for the College Algebra exams.

What about Homework and Testing?

Weekly assignments and exams must be completed for the MATH 1314 or MATH 1414 course. Additionally, there will be a developmental algebra exit exam students must pass in order to earn a C or higher in the support course and become TSI Complete in Mathematics. Homework for the support course consists of working in the ALEKS software and completing lessons by their due dates. Students must have access to a computer and internet access.

What is Expected in the Support Course?

In the support course, students participate in lessons covering prerequisite topics section-by-section in time for their College Algebra lectures.  These lessons may be in the form of a traditional lecture (with or without guided notes) or completion of a group activity.  Review of content already discussed in the MATH course may also be conducted in preparation for the College Algebra exams.

What about Homework and Testing?

Weekly assignments and exams must be completed for the MATH 1314 course. Additionally, there will be a developmental algebra exit exam students must pass in order to earn a C or higher in the support course and become TSI Complete in Mathematics. Weekly homework for the support course consists of written work from the review sections of the College Algebra textbook, handouts or quizzes.  Instructors may assign online homework to replace a portion of the written homework, so students must have access to a computer and internet access.

Need additional developmental algebra instruction?

If your math placement is not near TSI complete (college-ready) or would like more than a 2-hour support course, then MATD 0414/MATH 1314 (7 hours) Algebra Express or MATD 0444/MATH 1414 (8 hours) Algebra for Precalculus Express  are the correct corequisite to meet your needs. These Algebra Express courses provide a more robust integration of just-in-time remediation and have additional supports, including a second instructor in the classroom.  Contact your advisor for more information.
