Bell Work: In today’s world, people can share ideas through social media, writing, art, protests, or conversations. Which of these feels like the most natural way for you to express your ideas? What might make it difficult for someone your age to speak up on important issues?
Agenda: Book Tasting and forming groups
Objective: Students will participate in a gateway activity to consider what it means to have a “voice” in a global conversation and will create a structured reading schedule with their book club.
Bell Work: Consider your book’s cover or cover art. Based on what you have read so far, how does the artwork relate to your book?
Agenda: Create a reading schedule with your book club group/ Choice Board Day 1
Objective: Students will begin reading their selected novel and practice purposeful annotation to track how authors develop voice, perspective, and global issues.
Bell Work: The publisher of your book wants to issue a new edition with different cover art. What would you put on the cover of your book? Why would you choose this image?
Agenda: Begin reading/ Assign annotation sheet/ Discuss expectations for the evidence tracker and the dialectical journal quizzes.
Objective: Students will continue reading and apply annotation strategies to identify key passages that reveal point of view and emerging themes.
Bell Work: Write a letter from your story’s protagonist to its antagonist.
Agenda: Continue reading and work on annotations sheet.
