No School- Spring Break
Objective: As the novel comes to an end, students will spend the lesson thinking about key themes of the text, and how they are portrayed in Chapter 9. Students will display their ability to articulate what an author is saying about a topic, through key characters, relationships and events.
Bell Work: Nick’s statement that Gatsby is “worth the whole damn bunch put together” suggests that Nick: Explain your answer
A. Fully approves of Gatsby’s lifestyle
B. Recognizes Gatsby’s genuine devotion and idealism compared to others’ carelessness
C. Dislikes Daisy more than Gatsby
D. Believes Gatsby is morally perfect
Assignment: Read Chapter 9/ Complete "Reactions to Gatsby's Death"/ Go over important points to discuss.
Learning Target: Students will reflect on the essential questions for the unit by gathering evidence from the text to answer each EQ in paragraph form. Students will compose a quality body paragraph response to each essential question.
Bell Work: Gatsby believed in the green light, the orgastic future that year by year recedes before us. It eluded us then, but that’s no matter--to-morrow we will run faster, stretch out our arms farther...And one fine morning---- So we beat on, boats against the current, borne back ceaselessly into the past. What do you think eluded means? What does eluded actually mean?
Assignment: Assign and begin working on the essential question reflections.

Bell Work: And as I sat there brooding on the old, unknown world, I thought of Gatsby’s wonder when he first picked out the green light at the end of Daisy’s dock. He had come a long way to this blue lawn, and his dream must have seemed so close that he could hardly fail to grasp it. He did not know that it was already behind him, somewhere back in that vast obscurity beyond the city, where the dark fields of the republic rolled on under the night. What do you think obscurity means? What does obscurity actually mean?
