Today we:

Turned in book report and the annotated bibliography (got bibliographies back)

Received our outline for the research paper---must be done by HAND--I explained the particulars of it. If you were absent, print this up and email me with any questions

Homework:

Work on your outline this weekend---It is due on WED 1/16

All late work from week 3 Due TONIGHT---Cut off date is tonight for all WEEK 3 work

Thursday Jan 10

Today we:

  • WARNING! CUT OFF DATE FOR LATE WEEK 3 WORK IS TOMORROW!!!!!
  • Finished our Annotated Bibliographies in class (and added the book to it)

Homework:

  • Book Report due Friday at beginning of period- hard deadline
  • Work on bibliography at home tonight--include your book!!!---This will be due Friday
  • Last chance for NEA Synthesis essay rewrites is TODAY AFTER SCHOOL at promptly 3:35 pm. Bring your essay and sources.

Wed Jan 9

Today we:

  • Worked on our Annotated Bibliographies (use your handout for annotated bibliography)
  • Received a handout for proper formatting of sources in the annotated bibliography
    • Be sure to check and revise ALL of the reflection portions of your source entries---make sure you are saying what, how, and where you will pull those sources into your paper

Tuesday Jan 8

Today we:

  • Received the book report form (will be posted later)---DUE ON FRIDAY with some student presentations
  • Received back the NEA grants synthesis essays and read a sample essay and discussed strengths and weaknesses
      • Issues:
          • issue at hand should be mentioned in the intro so that the thesis statement has some context and makes more sense
          • Topic sentences NEED to be solid claims to support / give reasons for your thesis statement
          • Still having issues with people not giving context for sources and proper attribution phrases
          • Some idea jumping and arguments are not logical and/or cohesive (Remember! This is an argument paper! Make your case! Convince the other side!)
          • Nuance and insight on the matters being discussed are lacking in many papers--many people just threw quotes in to get them in there---but it only ended in tears--my tears.
          • essays with 4's basically mean the argument was poor or poorly constructed/organized, sources not well synthesized

Make up days for Synthesis essay (4's and below) are Tuesday and Thursday after school---you will hand write it again with a 40 min timed session. If you do not show up on one of those days, no rewrite will be done. You must bring your original essay and packet of sources/prompt to the session. Please show up to the rewrite at 3:35 promptly.


  • We looked at the prompt and rubric for this paper, began compiling our research sources, and began planning our research paper---you will be expected to work on this ALL week for homework!

Homework:

  • Book report is due Friday--absent or not. Get it done tonight, please, if possible. (if you did a good job taking notes on your book over the break, this report should be cake)
  • Use outline format sheet to plan your research paper
