Friday Dec 7

Today we:

  • Turned in syllabus and any late work
  • Took CLASS EXPECTATIONS QUIZ
  • Went to library, got our "banned books" and filled out the BANNED BOOK INQUIRY SHEET and turned that in


Homework:

  • Read your book at home this weekend!! Bring it to school every day! (Divide the number of pages by 14---that's how many days you have to read the book---the number you get is the average number of pages you must read per day in order to finish by Dec 21

Thursday Dec 6

Today we:

  • Watched a John Green video about his book Looking for Alaska being banned
  • Discussed the PROS and CONS of banning books (see link to website here)
      • TOOK NOTES ON THESE SOURCES TO USE IN TODAY'S PAPER

Wrote a 1 page response to the following prompt:

Should parents or other adults be able to ban books from schools and libraries?

Write a 3-paragraph, 1 page-long written response and come up with a claim that shows your opinion on this matter. Defend your claim with REASONS and for every reason, elaborate on your ideas, explaining yourself and pulling in examples to defend your reasoning.

Write in complete sentences

Indent your three paragraphs

Follow through on all ideas--elaborate and BE CLEAR!!!

Use transitions in between new ideas and to make your writing sound clearer and to make ideas connect (COHESIVE)

Follow rules of capitalization, punctuation

Use correct spelling

  • Get materials for class
  • Study notes for class expectations quiz TOMORROW
  • Get syllabus sheet signed!!!
  • BRING ID TOMORROW
  • Create a list of banned/challenged books you might want to read. Access library website to see if SEHS library has it in stock. We go to library tomorrow.

Wednesday Dec 5

Today we:

  • Turned in any signed syllabus sheets and missing goals sheets
  • Turned annotated articles from yesterday for grading
  • Ice breakers
  • Got on computers and accessed class website, Synergy, and how to access messages on Synergy--made sure we have access to 4j email account

Looked at small list of banned books: talk about how to find banned and challenged books on the internet, their SYNOPSES, and why they were banned...You will create a list of banned/challenged books you might want to read and select a book in the library on Friday...I MUST approve the book (as some are not fiction, not young adult (high school level), and some are anthologies of stories...The book selected MUST be a fiction of about 150-300 pages.)

Homework:

  • Finish your notes on the articles you annotated!
  • Get materials for class

Tuesday Dec 4

Today we:

  • Filled out a goals sheet and turned in for credit
  • Received the syllabus, read it and went over main points (signature page on back is due BY Friday or there'll be late points deducted (Keep the rest of the syllabus in your binder)
  • Received notes on class expectations and added information to it---test on this on Friday
  • Received homework packet: "The Fear of Making Mistakes" and "Growth Mindset"

Homework:

  • Signed Syllabus due BY Friday
  • Study "classroom expectation notes" for quiz on Friday
  • Read and Annotate articles!! Highlight/ Underline main ideas/ good points ---make comments to show your thinking on the articles (see website and video below):
