  • Read 69-75 and filled out the last section for the ACT 1 packet
  • Discussed and turned in the ACT 1 packet
  • Received a SECOND packet for Act 2
  • Received a handout for a video "Divide and Conquer" to take notes on
  • Watched "Divide and Conquer: Don't be a Sucker" and took notes
  • Turned in notes handout for the video

Homework:

  • read 76-81 and fill out that section in the packet for Act 2 (second packet handed out today)

Lesson OBJECTIVE

By the end of the lesson, students will be able to analyze the roles that money and sexism have in the younger family..

First: What questions do you have about the play?

1.Write for 10 minutes answering the following questions:

- What is sexism to you?

- Is the Younger family sexist? Why or why not. -à look for quotes to share!

- What role does money play in the family? à look for quotes to share!

2.After writing, get with the person sitting behind you (some people may have three people) and share your answers. Pick one person to share out for the group.

3.Class discussion of sexism

4.Focused Conversation:

Everybody take a minute to jot down a few ideas on these questions cause I might call on you randomly

- “What plan does Walter have? Do you think it is a good one? Why or why not?

- “How would you describe the relationship between Mama Younger and Ruth Explain your answer

- How does the conversation between Brenda and Ruth illustrate sexism (discrimination based on sex/gender)?

2. Now get with your elbow buddy and talk about your answers. Have one-person volunteer to share out.

3. Focused think, pair share on the first part of the reading!

Keep your piece of paper and answer from the warm up. We will use it for Think-Pair-Share. Stay in your recorder, sharer partners. We will keep them for the activity. Take out your homework sheets from last night, and record some of your peers answers.

  • Finish reading the sections from today (33-46 and 47-53) you will fill out the packet for TWO sections

2. Write for five minutes about the definition of a theme, and the difference between a thematic topic and a thematic statement and an example of theme from a movie you saw recently

3. turn to the person sitting next to you an share what you wrote!

4. Thumb poll on who is comfortable with a theme and the difference between a thematic topic and a thematic statement

5. We will be reading Raisin in the sun which is about An African American Family trying to buy a home in the 1950’s. .

6. The end product you will be producing for this unit is a thematic essay. It is critical that, while you read, you take notes on quotes that you can use for the paper

7. Vocabulary time! Work with your elbow partner to answer the vocabulary answers. Do not use the internet or dictionaries

8. Now, work with your partner on one piece of paper to answer the following questions:

- Do you agree with the following statement: money is life? Once upon a time freedom used to be life, now it is just money.

-What struggles did African Americans face in getting housing. In the 1950’s? think back to the redlining video

9. Wrap up. Read the poem at the front of the book individually and write a brief guess about what you think “raisin in the sun” means

1.Read pages 25-32 and answer the questions that correspond to those pages. Do not read ahead
