Friday Feb 15

Per 5 Ms. Scott

Today we:

Discussed the BODY PAR. 1 planning sheet---Many students tried to fit TWO characters and how they convey theme on the handout---This is a planning sheet for ONLY 1 character. Some students will need to revise it on the back side.

Went over the sample essay I handed out a couple of days ago and looked at what a body paragraph in a thematic analysis essay looks like:

    • Topic sentence
    • Context of scenes leading to text evidence of theme being conveyed by a certain character
    • Analysis of the text evidence in relation to theme and how that character expresses this particular lesson or human experience
    • Wrapping up with a thematic statement at the end of that paragraph (option)

Began writing body paragraph 1 on computers

Homework:

No homework this weekend...Bring books to class on TUESDAY!!!

Thursday, February 14th- Mr. Jensen's 4th Period

Happy Valentines Day everyone!

Homework:

- finish Raisin by tomorrow

-Turn in any missing handouts


What did we do today?

- We worked on a Valentines grammar worksheet!

We did a character development worksheet.

THURSDAY FEB 14

Per 5 Ms. Scott

Today we:

  • Filled out the text evidence/ theme/ character sheet for body paragraph 1 and turned this in
  • Revised and cleaned up our intro paragraphs (using the sample essay I gave you yesterday)

DO NOT return your books yet!!

  • None--or finish the handout from today

Wednesday, February 13th, Mr. Jensen's 4th Period

Homework:

  • Read to page 135 by tomorrow

Turn in the 120-150 handout by Friday

Turn in an extra credit assignment by Friday:

a. A description or drawing of the Younger’s perfect home

b.An interview with a character- 10 questions and a brief paragraph about why you chose these questions.

What did we do today?

  • we reviewed theme and thematic statement.
  • We answered the essential question: what is toxic masculinity and how does it impact the Younger family?
  • To answer that question, we did a think pair share with these questions:

is it fair for Walter to say that Mama “bashed his dreams” at the end of Scene 1?

Q2: How are Walter and George different? George and Joseph?

Why is Ma’am so Concerned when Walter walks out on the family?

George says he wants a “simple...sophisticated girl”. What does he mean by that?

Wed Feb 13

Today we:

  • Turned in packet 2--got it graded
  • Received our packets back
  • Determined what thematic topic and character(s) we will be writing about in our thematic essay (we used our reading packets for this!)
  • Went over the intro paragraph of a sample thematic essay (PLEASE get this from me if you were absent today!)
  • Began typing our intro paragraphs for the thematic essay

Homework:

  • Check grades and get your missing work in!!!!!


Tuesday, February 12th, Mr. Jensen's 4th Period

What did we do today?

We highlighted our sample essays that Mr. Jensen handed out in class for the following information

- the thesis statement

- the topic sentences

- the way the author introduces quotes

- the quotes themselves


Then, we had quiet work time so everyone could be on the same page (no pun intended).


Homework:

Finish any handouts you have

read to page 120 by tomorrow

Tuesday Feb 12

Period 5 Ms. Scott

Today we:

  • Discussed last night's reading
  • Silent reading pages 121-130 and fill out that section of the packet

Homework:

  • Read pages 131-151 (all of ACT 3--finish the play) and fill out that section of the packet
  • Tomorrow we discuss the ending and begin work on essay preparation and text evidence

Monday, February 11th, Mr. Jensen's 4th Period

What did we do today?

  • We looked at a sample thematic essay and graded it with the rubric that Mr. Jensen handed out
  • We started looking for themes in Raisin in the Sun (You should be up to page 89).
  • We brainstormed themes in our group for RIS and wrote one paragraph on a theme from RIS
  • we had reading time for RIS

Homework:

Read to page 109 of RIS by Tuesday + do the 89-109 handout

Finish theme paragraph if you didn't in class

If you missed the spelling test on Friday, you will have to make it up during lunch.

Monday Feb 11

Today we:

  • Discussed pages 76-95
  • Read silently pages 96-109 and filled out section 3 of the second packet
  • Turned in missing work from last week
  • Filled out an exercise sheet regarding internal and external conflicts

Homework:

  • Read pages 110-120 and fill out that section of the packet
