Somebody knocked on my door looking for you (or with "official reasons"), should I let them in?

As a general rule, it is not a good idea to allow strangers in your house no matter what. My name should not be a "magic password" that can get you to let your guard down. If somebody is looking for me, they can knock on the front door. Please do not divulge any information about me to a stranger no matter what reasons they invoke and do not let them inside the house. If they insist, you can tell them you cannot talk anymore and cut the conversation short. If you feel endangered, call 911.

In general, no official person will knock on the side door and if they knock on the front door it should not be your problem. If somebody claims to have official credentials and want to talk to you personally, you might want to ask to see such ID and check it by calling an independently verified phone number.

I will treat personal information about yourself with the same care so you need not worry about that. If, however, you are expecting someone, please see the receiving courier answer for more info.
