遣米使節団が持ち帰ったチェスの本
はじめに
1860(万延元)年、江戸幕府はアメリカに使節団を派遣した。これが遣米使節団。
この使節団がチェスの本を持ち帰るまでのいきさつについては、戎棋夷説氏の次のサイトがくわしい。

これを読んで、使節団が持ち帰ったチェスの本が、その後どうなったか知りたくなり、少し追いかけてみた。
遣米使節団の記録
遣米使節団の記録(の一部)は、「国立国会図書館デジタルコレクション」で公開されている。

遣米使節団が持ち帰った書籍や物品の目録は、この本のp.334-371に掲載されていて、万延元年のチェスゲームにあるように、チェスの本が3冊掲載されている。
また、p.369に「此五十九部七十七冊一束蕃書調所江相納度候」とあることから、これらの本が「蕃書調所」に収められたことがわかる。
蕃書調所の蔵書目録
「蕃書調所」の蔵書目録は、箕作秋坪による写本が「国立国会図書館デジタルコレクション」で公開されている。
この目録をチェックしたが、残念ながらチェスの本らしきものは見当たらなかった。
ただ、この目録に記された本の年代は最新でも1857年なので、遣米使節団が渡米する1860(万延元)年より前に作られた可能性がある。もしそうなら、使節団が持ち帰った本が入っていないのは当然かもしれない。
東京大学の蔵書目録
「蕃書調所」は、1862(文久2)年に「洋書調所」になり、さらに1863(文久3)年には「開成所」と改称された。
その後、明治になると「開成学校」となり、1877(明治10)年には東京医学校と統合して東京大学になった(※1)。この開成学校と東京大学の蔵書目録は、2003年に復刻されている。

チェスの本はアメリカから持ち帰った本なので、英語で書かれていると思われる。そのため、洋書、特に英語の本の目録を調査する必要があるが、この復刻版の目録の中で該当するのは次のとおりである。

それぞれの目録について、チェスの本が含まれているかどうか調査した(※3)。その結果、以下のことがわかった。
1. 1875(明治8)年の開成学校の目録と、1877(明治10)年から1896(明治29)年の東京大学の目録に、Paul Morphy (1837-1884) の本が2冊含まれている。

1冊目は、万延元年のチェスゲームで、『将棊司欧羅巴記行』から連想される本として挙げられている本で、その推測は見事に的中したことになる。この本は「Googleブックス」で全文を読むことができる。
2冊目は、Morphyの実戦集で、この本も「Googleブックス」で公開されている。
この2冊は1859年と1860年の出版で、いずれもアメリカで出版された本である。遣米使節団がアメリカを訪れたのは1860(万延元)年なので、年代的にも一致する。使節団が出版されたばかりのこの2冊を持ち帰ったのは、まず間違いないだろう。
2. 1891(明治24)年以降の目録には、 Haldemanの著書が加わる。
Samuel Stehman Haldeman. Tours of a chess knight. Philadelphia, E.H. Butler, & Co., 1864.
この本は、チェスのナイトを使ったパズルの本だが、1864年の出版なので、遣米使節団が持ち帰った本ではない。
3. チェスの "Handbook"は目録にはなかった。
七人のチェスマスターでは、 遣米使節団が持ち帰った本の1冊としてスタントンの本が挙げられている。
Howard Staunton. The chess-player's handbook. London, Henry G. Bohn, 1847.
そのため、「The chess-player's handbook」という書名と「Howard Staunton」という著者名に注意して調査したが、目録の中にこの本を見つけることはできなかった。
ただ、元の記事である Japanese Chess. The Chess world, vol.4, no.3, 1868, p.79-84. をみると、原文では "Handbook"とあるだけなので、これをスタントンの「The chess-player's handbook」と断定するのは無理があるように思える(※4)。
They were much gratified by a present of a set of Chessmen and a copy of the "Handbook," which will probably become a text book of the Japanese Chess College at some future day.

関東大震災
その後、東京大学の図書館は、1923(大正12)年の関東大震災で灰燼に帰した。これらの目録に掲載されたチェスの本も、他の本と一緒に燃えたものと思われる。
1928(昭和3)年、「東京帝国大学洋書目録 第1編」が刊行されたが、その中にMorphyのチェスの本は含まれていなかった。
まとめ
遣米使節団が持ち帰ったチェスの本3冊のうち2冊は、東京大学の蔵書目録に掲載された次の2冊と思われる。

その後、Morphyのチェスの本2冊は、1923(大正12)年の関東大震災で失われた。
