Parent Teacher Conference

Conferences for parents and teachers are scheduled each school year. These conferences provide a way for you and your child’s teacher to communicate. You can give information about your child which could be useful to the teacher and the teacher can provide information on how you can help your child in the learning process.

BEFORE THE CONFERENCE

Decide what you want to ask the teacher. Jot down questions. Try to pinpoint specific problems. Check with your child about things he/she does not understand and would like to ask the teacher. Decide what you want to tell the teacher about your child. Be on time.

DURING THE CONFERENCE

Ask the teacher your questions, such as: Do you think my child is working up to his/her ability? How is my child doing in subjects? May I see some samples of his/her work? Has my child shown any special interests or abilities? How does my child get along with others? Has my child shown any leadership qualities? How much homework do you assign? Is there any way you want me to help my child with it?

What do you expect of me as a parent with a child in your class and school? Be prepared to answer questions about your child’s feelings on school, free-time activities, homework habits, home responsibilities, health and emotional status. Take notes during the conference.

AFTER THE CONFERENCE

Talk with your child and point out strengths as well as areas that need improvement. Call the school or write a note if you wish to check on your child’s progress at a later time.
