York and QMUL both offer a range of accommodation on campus. These have the benefit of not only being conveniently located but do not require a guarantor as private rented accommodation does. Feel free to have a look at what is available in York and QMUL.
York: On-campus accommodation is not guaranteed for postgraduates who have already completed their first year, but you are still able to apply if you would prefer to live on campus. Limited accommodation for couples and families is also available.
QMUL: On-campus accommodation is not guaranteed for postgraduates who have already completed their first year. You can still apply to live on campus if you wish but will no longer be considered a priority for accommodation. Further details can be viewed on the QMUL accommodation website.
Typically, UK students will move into private rented accommodation after their first year of study, alongside fellow students they have met. Websites such as Rightmove, On the Market, and Zoopla are useful websites for seeing what is available in your area. For shorter term lets you may want to look at Spare Room or Homestay, though usually you will be expected to remain in attendance for the full academic year and a year-long tenancy will be fine.
York:Â
private renting usually requires a guarantor, who will be expected to cover the rent if you are unable to for any reason. If you do not have a guarantor in the UK, you may be asked to pay all or some of your rent in advance (usually between 6 and 12 months rent). Otherwise the University of York is partnered with a rent guarantor scheme for students who are in need of a guarantor.
similarly if you do not have any housemates to move in with, you may want to make use of the York GSA's Find a Housemate service. Rental properties are typically cheaper for larger numbers of tenants and arranging accommodation as an individual can become expensive
Both York and QMUL also offer clinics and advice on private housing which you may wish to consult before looking for somewhere to live.
If you need any further advice on private housing, you can also contact Citizens' Advice who will be able to help you as well.
