School Based Apprenticeships & Traineeships

You can complete a school-based traineeship or apprenticeship alongside your HSC. While it takes longer than a full-time program, you still complete the standard 1,200–1,600 hours of training, including at least 100 days of paid employment.

As a school based, part time trainee, you get:

• A paid job

• Accredited Vocational training, such as 1st- and then 2nd-year apprenticeship studies at TAFE 

• An HSC

• A nationally recognised qualification

• Suitable for students in Years 11 - 12, although in some scenarios, a Year 10 student may apply for an SBAT, however this is subject to prior successful Kickstart process and trial periods, and the outcome of a Parent/Student VET/ TAPS Support meeting

• One-day per week in paid work with your employer

• One-day per week in Vocational learning (ie TAFE, online learning, depending on the relevant RTO for the apprenticeship

• Three-days of on-campus normal school routine:

• An SBAT replaces 2-Units of Preliminary/HSC learning, and may include ATAR eligibility for relevant subjects. An SBAT student accesses study periods to catch-up on supported, prioritised learning activities/assessments etc, in addition to their own-time.

• All other requirements for Prelim/HSC need to be met (ie. 10 further units for Prelim/8 further units for HSC.) 

• On days where the employer is unable to provide appropriate activities (such as extreme weather events, or the employer is on leave), the student then attends school as normal

A student pursuing the SBAT pathway MUST also pursue course selections at XCC/on-site as if this will be their eventual course of study, in case of the SBAT not going forward for any reason prior to commencement and settling (eg. the employer withdraws). 

The SBAT application process MUST be finalised by Term-4 Week-1 Friday, so for students hoping to participate, it is recommended that you seek a host employer by no later than the beginning of Term-3 (in Year 10).
