English is a mandatory, year long subject. Students complete 8 x 1 periods per 10 day cycle. The focus areas for Stage 5 supports students’ growing knowledge and understanding in the areas of:
Reading, viewing and listening to texts
Understanding and responding to texts
Expressing ideas and composing texts
Stage 5 English builds on the foundational skills developed in the earlier years to support the growing knowledge, understanding and skills in the areas of reading, viewing and listening to texts, understanding and responding to texts and expressing ideas and composing text.
In addition to mandatory English, students may elect to study Elective English (see below).
English Elective
English Elective gives students the opportunity to enhance their sophisticated analytical and creative writing skills. Students explore how content, language, form and style of texts reflect ideas and context, developing this understanding into personalised research areas. Whilst studying challenging literary texts, students will develop their enjoyment and understanding of how texts shape the world that we live in.
This elective is suited to students who regularly acheive A's on English assessment tasks.
Please note, this subject is in addition to the standard Yr9 or 10 English.
What Students Learn:
Students will develop knowledge, understanding and skills, individually and collaboratively, through:
analyse content, language, form and style of multiple challenging texts;
evaluate how texts reflect ideas and contexts;
evaluate how texts can be borrowed from and appropriated to reflect new values and attitudes;
search their own topics based on the pattern of study.
