Religious Education
At a time when society is becoming increasingly secular, there is an even greater need for young people to benefit from a high quality Secondary Religious Education Curriculum. The curriculum at Xavier Catholic College has been developed to inspire, stimulate and challenge students, especially in the areas of tradition, scripture, critical thinking and moral reasoning.
Relgious Education is a mandatory, year long subject. Students complete 5 x 1 periods per 10 day cycle.
High performing students going into Year 10 may apply to complete Studies of Religion I (SORI) instead of the standard Yr 10 RE course.

Studies of Religion I (Yr 10 Acceleration)

High performing Year 10 students will need to appy to be in this course. These students will not need to complete the standard Yr10 RE course.
Studies of Religion I promotes an understanding and critical awareness of the nature and significance of religion and the influence of belief systems and religious traditions on individuals and within society.
Course Number: Year 11 (11350) & Year 12 (15370).
NESA Studies of Religion 1 Stage 6 Syllabus
Number of Units: One Unit for each of the Preliminary Course (completed in Yr10) and HSC Course (completed in Yr11).
Minimum Hours: 60 hours of 'face to face' learning per year (2 hours per week).
Marks Available: 50 marks for the HSC Course (completed in Yr11).
Suitability: Students consistently achieving at an A-B range for both Religion and English at Year 9.
Exclusions: Studies of Religion II and Studies in Catholic Thought.
Other Information:
Students who undertake Studies of Religion I (Yr10 Commencement) will be required to study religion for 5 periods per fortnight in Year 10 and 4 periods per fortnight in Year 11.

The nature of religion and beliefs including Australian Aboriginal beliefs and spiritualities, as a distinctive response to the human search for meaning in life.

HSC Course (Year 12, completed in Year 11):
Religious and Belief Systems in Australia post 1945
Religious expression in Australia’s multi-cultural and multi-faith society since 1945, including an appreciation of Aboriginal spiritualities and their contribution to an understanding of religious beliefs and religious expression in Australia today.
Two Religious Traditions Depth Studies (from Buddhism, Christianity, Hinduism, Islam, Judaism)
Significant people and ideas
Ethical teachings in the religious tradition and bioethics of environmental ethics and sexual ethics
Significant practices in the life of adherents
Particular Course Requirements:
It is compulsory for students to participate in a three day Retreat in Year 12. Costs are included as part of the school fees.
This course is designed for students who have shown well developed literacy and research skills. It is highly desired that students wishing to study this course would be consistently achieving A or B grades in Year 10 Religion and English.
