Language Conventions are handwriting, capitalization, punctuation, and spelling. This can be tricky for first grade students to apply correctly. We will practice in class through lessons and shared writing. It is helpful to have students practice writing at home as well to support the learning from class. Students will learn to:
- Capitalization
- capitalize the first letter of others’ first and last names.
- capitalize the first letter of a sentence.
Punctuation
- use ending punctuation.
- use commas to separate single words in a series.
Grammar & Sentence Structure
- print legibly, using correct spacing between words and sentences.
- produce complete simple and compound sentences.
Spelling
- use grade appropriate spelling (sight words/word wall words), spells words phonetically and uses regular spelling patterns.
