Below are some of the skills and strategies that you may practice with your child as they progress through reading levels.
Level D
*Use eyes to track instead of finger.
*Use finger only when having difficulty.
*Look at root words and notice endings. (Ex: looked)
*Understand how to read words with endings. -s, -ed, -ing
*Think about what you can do to help yourself when you are stuck on a word. (see tricky word strategy page)
*Practice retelling in order.
Level E and F
*Talk/Think about what you already know about topic before you read.
*Only use eyes to track print unless you get stuck.
*Make predictions about what will happen next in story.
* Retell with a beginning, middle and end.
* Identify other books that had characters, places or events that were alike.
* How do characters’ feelings change?
* Practice sounding like character is feeling.
Level G and H
*Use what you know about topic to figure out tricky words.
*Think about what looks right and sounds right in the story.
*Correct self quickly once you know the right word.
*Reread to make sure story is clear and you understand.
* Identify characters and describe what they are like.
* Describe how characters’ change throughout the story.
*Make connections to self.
* Notice characters, places and events that were like those in other books read.
*Retell using main events with a beginning middle and end.
Level I and J
*Reread to make sure story is clear and you understand.
*Discuss connections to other books.
*Understand how characters are feeling and explain times when you felt that way.
*Connect to the character by how you have seen others react in the same situation.
*Understand how story is written to show different points of view.
*Identify the theme, lesson or big idea in the story.
Level K and L and M
*Reread to make sure story is clear and you understand.
*Remember what you read before to help you understand as you read.
*Follow character throughout story as they change/feel and then follow them into other stories too. (How do the books in these series build on one another?
*Read dialogue like a conversation and sound like characters.
*Identify various problems and solutions characters face throughout story.
*Identify lessons learned
