Students are expected to:
First Quarter
-produce short vowel sounds
-identify words that name actions and words that name persons, places, and things.
Second Quarter
-produce consonant blends and consonant digraphs sounds.
-recognize compound words are made up of shorter words.
Third Quarter
-produce long vowel sounds.
-determine what words mean from how they are used in context of a sentence heard or read.
-identify common root words and their inflectional endings.
Fourth Quarter
-locating words in a dictionary and arrange words in alphabetical order to the first letter.
-sort words into conceptual categories. (ex. sorting words by spelling pattern)
-distinguish shades of meaning among verbs and adjectives. (ex. “shouted,” “yelled,” or “cried.”
-read: irregularly spelled words, root words with inflectional endings, contractions and compound words, high-frequency words.
