Consider A.P Lang.
AP Language and Composition focuses on writing and the study of rhetoric, which is the study of persuasion. The texts that are included in AP Lang include lots of non-fiction and historical or current events. If you’re a person that likes English, there is plenty for you in this class, but there is also a lot for people who aren’t the typical “English” person…. a lot of students take it because they want the communication, critical thinking, and writing skills that will help them in their future careers in business, tech, creative careers, and I even have a handful of students who are into healthcare, and they use what we do in AP Lang to be leaders in that field, and to make them stand out.
I was sitting in class, staring out the window. There was a student sitting on the curb, maybe waiting to be picked up from school? I started to daydream about where that student was going, maybe a doctor appointment? No, they were leaving to be interviewed on TV. They recently invented the cure for cancer, accidentally, in chemistry class. It was awesome when it happened, we all got a week off from school. No one was injured, but their mistake caused a small explosion that set off the fire alarm and sprinklers. The entire school was soaked from the mess. Imagine that, a seventeen-year-old student stumbling on the cure for cancer. It’s not so crazy of an idea, Penicillin was discovered about the same way…
Do you ever daydream stories like this? Are you a creative person? Have you ever imagined yourself writing a movie, or publishing a novel, or winning the state slam poetry competition? Do you rewrite better endings to Netflix series in your head? Was Dr. Seuss a favorite of yours, because his stories were so unique? In this class, students will immerse in the creative side of writing. All levels of writers are welcome. Come write with us!
Learn how to debate, argue, give informative public speeches, and individual performance. Debate and Public Speaking is a wide-ranged field that offers different events from mock student congress, one on one and team debate, to prepared speeches, and theatrical monologues. This is an exciting student-driven class that will sharpen oration skills and prepare you for a lifetime of speaking.
