FOODS 1 (43210) 

Do you need kitchen skills? Food and Nutrition 1 covers all the basic information you will need to become a great cook. This course will help you understand the principles of nutrition and healthy lifestyles. You will have hands on experience, cooking in groups and learning basic food preparation. All areas of My Plate will be included.

CULINARY 1 (FOODS 2) (43220) 

This is the second course in the Culinary pathway.  You will review kitchen safety and sanitation, experience multiple food labs using different cooking methods, and lean about the 5 mother sauces and yeast breads.  You will also learn different knife cuts and practice them in recipes.  Lots of fun lab experiences as you continue learning about the culinary field.

Are you ready to move out? Afraid of starving? Going to miss your mom’s cooking? Sign up to learn more about nutrition and become better prepared for cooking on your own. Come join fellow classmates as we research and compile good recipes for eating on your own and on a limited budget.

BAKING AND PASTRY (43318)

This is a brand new course intended to be a Capstone course for students who have taken Foods 1 and Culinary 1.  Students must have their food handlers permit to participate in this course.  Students will learn about yeast breads, pastries, cakes, confectionary, and cookies.  Students will make some products that will be packaged and sold and may participate in some catering events.

PROSTART (43317) 

(COURSE ALTERNATES EVERY OTHER YEAR) Did you enjoy Foods I and Culinary I? Students will perform quantity food preparation as it relates to catering, bakery, restaurant, hospitality, and business operations. Students will be involved in food preparation for Fun Food Friday and SilverWolf of the Month luncheon. A food handler’s permit will be required. This is a very hands on class, and is a yearlong course that teaches about carreer opportunities in the food service/culinary arts industry. Students will have the opportunity to learn and practice safety and sanitation procedures, and to use and maintain food service equipment. This is the basic course from the National Restaurant Association that introduces you into the world of professional cooking. We will be working on communication skills, safety and sanitation, food preparation, meal planning, catering and other topics throughout this course. Culinary competitions can also be a fun part of this class.

PERSONAL & FAMILY FINANCE (43332)

Come play the classroom version of the GAME of LIFE!  Learn about controlling your finances instead of letting them control you.  This course meets the requirements for the General Financial Literacy (GFL) credit required for graduation.  You will learn all the personal financial literacy content (money management, spending, credit, savings, investing and insurance) with a financial health emphasis.  This course examines the role of family, social and emotional influences on financial behaviors; additionally we will look at the financial implications associated with addictions, abuse, dating, marriage, parenting, divorce and death.  Guest speakers and career exploration in financial behavioral health and counseling with be incorporated as well.

CHILD DEVELOPMENT - ECED 2500 (43240) 

Ever wonder where babies come from, why two year olds throw temper tantrums and four-year-olds are so bossy? Take Child Development and find the answers to these and many more questions concerning children and the way they grow and develop. Participate in observations and hands on activities. Test out your parenting skills by taking home a computerized baby!

Try your hand at teaching young children. Build an outstanding teaching file and use it when you teach preschool to FHS's Silver Pups. Participate in building developmental skills in children, and start your pathway to earning your Child Development Associate Certification (CDA). Observe infants, toddlers and preschoolers in their surroundings. If you enjoy working with children, this is the class for you. Weber County Food Handler’s Permit Required

This course is for students who have taken Early Childhood Education 1 and 2. Come participate in FHS’s onsite child development lab with the Silver Pups! For students considering a career in child care and teaching, this is the ultimate hands-on experience!! The primary focus of this class is to complete steps required for the Child Development Associate (CDA) credential through this on-site early childhood educational experience.  Required: Weber County Food Handler’s Permit

FASHION DESIGN STUDIO – PS 1503 (43230) 

This course explores how fashion influences everyday life and introduces students to the fashion industry. Topics covered include: fashion fundamentals, elements and principles of design, textiles, consumerism, and fashion related careers, with an emphasis on personal application. This course will strengthen comprehension of concepts and standards outlined in Sciences, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) education. FASHION DESIGN MERCHANDISING (43231) 

The Fashion Merchandising course is an introductory course that teaches the concepts of entry-level business and fashion fundamentals. The following list of skill standards prepares the student in fashion merchandising with the fundamentals of: basic fashion concepts and marketing terminology, fashion cycles, key components of the fashion industry, retail merchandise categories, fashion promotion and fashion careers. This course will strengthen comprehension of concepts and standards outlined in Sciences, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) education. INTERIOR DESIGN 1 (43250) 

Everyone lives in some kind of home – why not make it a palace? This basic introductory class enables students to explore their creativity in the field of interior design. You will understand the elements and principles of design, furniture arrangement basics, floor plan evaluation, area planning and careers. The color unit and the 3D Room project are the favorites. At the end of this class, you’ll want to redecorate your bedroom!

INTERIOR DESIGN 2 – IDT1010 (43260) 

Do you love to watch HGTV and dream about designing your own home? Come and learn how to work with clients and apply your creativity and design skills to interior design. You will learn about architectural and historical features that make a house. We will then make that house a home by designing floor plans, furniture, and fill each space with your choices of color scheme, lighting, fabric, and wall treatments. Maybe after this class you will become the next Chip or Joanna Gaines!

FOUNDATIONS OF NUTRITION - NUTR1020 (43311) 

Everyone likes to eat, but do you know what you're eating? Learn about the available 'tools' to help you choose the foods you eat wisely. Which vitamins and minerals are important for good health and why. A dietary analysis will open your eyes and shock you as you analyze what you have eaten. This Course fulfills a LIFE SCIENCE credit towards your Associate Degree.

TEACHING AS A PROFESSION  (25005)

Experience and participate as you learn about the role and characteristics of an effective educator. Observe and participate with teachers and students in the classroom. Students will explore the exciting world of teaching; examine what it means to be a teacher; and participate in field observations. This course is designed to introduce students to personal and professional experiences within the educational community. This course or an approved equivalent, is a prerequisite to elementary and secondary licensure programs in the department of teacher education at Weber State University. (2 PERIOD BLOCK)

This course is an introduction to the Behavioral Health industry.  Topics that will be introduced in this foundational level course include understanding self-concept, effective communications, healthy relationships, addictive behaviors, mental health disorders, and protective laws and rights of patients and practitioners.

SPORT SEWING 1 (43120)

Students work at their own pace to learn basic design and constructions skills to sew projects.  No previous sewing experience necessary.  The skills will introduce and prepare students for employment opportunities in the outdoor/sports design industry.  A bag, apron, backpack, hammock, hoodie, or hat are just a few possible sewing project they can make.

Students work at their own pace to learn intermediate design and construction skills using technical fabrics to sew projects.  The skills will introduce and prepare students for employment opportunities in the outdoor/sports design industry.  A jacket, vest, and dufflebag are just a few possible sewing projects they can make.
