Interview with Ms. Nichols

There is a lot that goes on behind the scenes at Pioneer High School, especially for the wellbeing of the students. From running our school’s Response to Intervention (RTI) Program, being the GSA Club advisor, to even directing carpool traffic sometimes, Ms. Nichols takes on many responsibilities but is very passionate about her job.

With a friendly greeting in Ms. Nichols’ office, the interview began with a well in depth explanation as to what exactly the RTI Program is. She goes on to explain that the RTI Program is fairly new to education, being around for seven years. It is a program in which the student body is looked at through data. From there, individuals who are in need of more support are given the help they need. Ms. Nichols presented a well organized chart that demonstrates the system in which the RTI Program follows.

When wrapping up her explanation as to what the RTI Program is, Ms. Nichols provided the most well-fitting description of her job: “My job is to get support to the students who need the help.” She goes on to add that her job gives her the opportunity to help the school without actually having to discipline: “I don’t have to discipline but get to help the whole school.”

We then went on to discuss her role as the GSA Club advisor. Ms. Nichols mentioned that the presence of the club is “Important regardless of how active the club is.” Meeting on Mondays at lunch in room D106, the club is adamant about being a safe community: “We have goals of “advocating and educating.” Ms. Nichols also notes the club's participation in fundraising and working with services such as Yolo Communicare.

Describing her job as crazy and wonderful, Ms. Nichols is strongly passionate about helping students. Her perspective is ”Making sure no one gets left behind.” If you find yourself in need of some extra positivity, Ms. Nichols actually runs a Positivity and Wellness Remind.
