Wrapping Up the PHS Waterpolo Season

Zachary Hatfield - January 9th, 2023

There was a minute left on the clock, and it was the final quarter of the game; the scores were extremely close; the Pioneer team was trying their hardest against their opponents, and almost won, but the final shot they needed to win was blocked by the opposing goalie, and they held it till the end to win.

Waterpolo is an incredibly challenging and exciting team sport that combines elements from multiple different sports. Waterpolo is played in a pool, it requires players to have great swimming skills, excellent endurance, and the ability to work with a team.

Logan Martin is an all-league athlete and the team captain of the Pioneer water polo team. Logan's journey in water polo has been a journey of dedication and hard work. As a student-athlete and team captain, he understands his responsibilities and the impact he can have on his teammates. Logan's leadership style is characterized by his ability to inspire and motivate others, even while the team is at their worst. "Sometimes it gets tough, and you might feel like giving up, but that's when you have to dig deep and find the strength to keep pushing forward," Logan shares.

One of the most crucial roles of a team captain in water polo is to maintain high morale and foster a sense of unity among the players. Regardless of the outcome of a game, Logan, and other team captains emphasize the importance of never giving up and always giving their best effort. This mindset has been one of the key parts in the improvement of the Pioneer water polo team, which struggled in the league standings. With the guidance of the coaches, team captains, and the team's determination, they are continuing to improve, and slowly rise in the league's standings.

The influence of a coach cannot be underestimated in the development of a successful water polo team. Mary Park, the coach of the Pioneer water polo team, sets high standards and expectations for her players. "Mary pushes us to our limits to keep us disciplined and focused as a team." Logan acknowledges the impact of her strict approach. This discipline pushes a sense of accountability within the team, pushing them to perform at their best. The coaches make the team attend a study hall every Friday instead of practicing, to ensure their grades match their ability to play in the pool.

The second coach for the water polo team is Jennifer Pareas, who brings more of a guiding role to the team, helping them while not being as strict. Pareas helps guide the team after Park teaches them something. “Pareas is definitely a lot nicer than park is, It’s like a good-cop bad-cop kind of situation, but the contrast of the coaches works very well for our team.” Gavin stated

The Pioneer water polo team is a diverse group of students from various grade levels, each bringing their unique skills and perspectives to the game. Freshman Gavin Ash, who joined the team this year, expresses his enthusiasm for the sport and his commitment to continue playing in future seasons. "I had so much fun this season, and I can't wait to be back in the pool next year," The new talent and fresh perspectives from younger players like Gavin adds to the dynamic of the team, and improves the development of the skills and morale of all the players.

Logan is a graduating student athlete who is distraught to have to leave his team . As he ends his final season, he reflects on his final season, and starts thinking about his future after high school. While he might miss the sport, he is eager to see the progress of the team and support the new players who will step into his role soon. "I'll definitely be showing up to some of the games next year to cheer on my teammates and see how they're doing." Logan states.

The rest of the graduating athletes share the same thoughts, and, but are ready to support whoever is going to be taking their place in the upcoming years. The seniors' departure will create a void, but the team remains optimistic about the potential of the new members the Pioneer water polo team has to come.

Water polo gives you a constant feeling of adrenaline when you're in the water. When you have the ball, it feels as if time freezes, and the spotlight is only on you at that moment. Every player has an extremely crucial role to play in the game, and when someone isn’t doing their part, the whole team can suffer from it. Teamwork is absolutely crucial for the team, and if there’s no communication, there’s no chance of winning.

Logan Martin's experiences as a student-athlete and team captain highlight the importance of determination, motivation, and accepting challenges to achieve success. The Pioneer water polo team's commitment to improvement, guided by their coaches Mary Park, and Jennifer Pareas ensures a bright future for the team as they eagerly await the next season and the new players who will join them. With their passion and dedication, the Pioneer water polo team will definitely give their opponents a challenge in the years to come.

Pioneer's next waterpolo season will begin in August 2024
