Feminist Club

Pioneer High School’s Feminist Club takes on a big role of creating a comfortable and inclusive environment for the women in our community, especially during the month of October. In an interview with Feminist Club’s President, Maria Jaime Hernandez, she gives more insight to the inner-workings of the club.

A club fueled by activism has big shoes to fill, but this club has already gotten a head start on making a significant change. During October, Feminist Club hosted a Menstrual Product Drive which, according to Hernandez, would “install pads and tampons in every room because they don’t refill the dispensers.” Since so many women are facing period poverty throughout our school, it’s extraordinary to know that Feminist Club is providing these necessities for girls in need. Hernandez hopes that in the near future they will do the Menstrual Product Drive again and are even hoping to extend the drive for the whole school year as it has already been a huge success.

As many may know, October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, a month where people deck out in pink to show their support for breast cancer survivors. The Feminist Club wanted students to be aware of the importance of this month, and because of that, they passed out beautiful pink ribbons. We asked Hernandez what the message was behind handing them out to the students and she told us, “a lot of kids have family members who have or had gone through breast cancer and we just think it's important to shed some light on breast cancer patients.” Although the act was minimal, it was such a thoughtful and great way to honor breast cancer survivors.

Upcoming this year, Hernandez hopes that Feminist Club is able to host a week-long bake sale which would potentially raise enough money for the club to go more throughout the school year.
