Where the Crawdads Sing: A Review

Kaela Rapadas and Sarah Jackson - December 13th, 2022

Where the Crawdads Sing is a new Netflix film based on the novel. The film showcases Kya Clark and her life living out in the marsh. It introduces Kya’s childhood, revealing her abusive father who drove away her mother and her siblings, until Kya was alone with her father. Eventually even her father abandons her, leaving her to fend for herself. Since she had to grow up alone, she took trust in local store owners, Mabel and Jumpin’. As she continues to grow up, she finds herself in many unpleasant situations, specifically relationships with significant others.

This is an outstanding movie. It has good acting, good writing and casting, and the storytelling style makes the movie intriguing and eye-catching. Where the Crawdads Sing tells a story that sheds light on many important issues, such as domestic abuse, which I think is something important not to gloss over. This is a film that can be enjoyed by many people, despite the difference in preferred movie genres. Overall, I definitely recommend watching this film.

As someone who read the novel, it was really exciting to see it be adapted on screen. Although I prefer the book, the film did not fail to impress me. Similar emotions felt while reading the book, matched how I felt when watching the film. Whether you read the book or watch the film, expect a rollercoaster of emotions. Whether it's the book or the film, I highly recommend Where the Crawdads Sing.

All in all, we can both say that regardless of previously reading the book, the film can be enjoyed by almost anyone!
