what have you been up to?

Ethan has been doing A LOT of read! He then finds sight words in the text and practices writing them. What great learning! He has also been doing many art projects each day. Ethan decorated eggs made out of salt dough with many different designs. How fun!

Breaking up the day with art projects helps your child focus all learning.

WAY TO GO ETHAN!

Aiden has been going on walks in the woods by his house. He likes to walk by the river and pick up sticks.

Exploring outside is a great way to incorporate science into your child's at home learning.

Success!!!!!

We had a great first meeting on Zoom! It was fun to see our friends and do some learning together!

First we took attendance by reading our friends name tags from our tables.

Next we were just going to read 1 book, but everyone wanted more so we read 3 Old Favorites; The Three Billy Goats Gruff, From Head to Toe and We Are In A Book!.

Then, we looked for and spelled some sight words that were in the books. We identified different parts of the book; cover, back, spine, title page, etc.

Finally, we took some time to share what we have been up to; practicing writing letters and numbers, writing books with moms and sisters, reading whole books by ourselves, doing some of the work from the school bags and of course making art.

We said goodbye with a fist bump to the screen.

I am looking forward to doing another Zoom meeting again soon. I would also be interested in starting more one on one Zoom meetings too. So be on the lookout for more Zoom invites!

how to help your child do

school work at home

Do one thing at a time

Break things down into smaller more manageable chunks. For example fold a worksheet in half and then once done, take a short break.

Have a specific spot to do school work

Maybe set goals by choosing what needs to get done in the first half of the day, then again for the second half, etc

Have a routine of when it is time to wake up work, play, eat, go to bed etc

Give many short breaks, movement breaks NOT Ipad/video game breaks. There are some great movement videos online by Koo Koo Kangaroo and Jack Hartmann , and specifically Baby Shark. These were the class's favorites.

Everyone is sharing their math thinking with their partner and the class. We are listening to understand and are able to revoice BIG ideas. We came up with a math GENERALIZATION.

After morning meeting we decorated the 100 signs that were on our rugs.

We counted to 100 many times during the day. We began by counting all 100 days of school. Our day involved many movement breaks connected to the number 100. We counted to 100 with Jack Hartman, we sang songs, and did 100 jumps, 100 claps and even lay silently and still for 100 seconds!

We made 100th day necklaces using 100 Fruit Loops!

re introducing playdough!

We earned back our playdough center at Explore. We discussed what it looks like and sounds like to play with and clean up from playdough. We were very excited and met all the expectations of being responsible while using playdough.

Readers' workshop

We are focusing on adding to our favorites book bin. These are books that we read over and over and over. By doing this we are able to read the words, read the pictures and/or retell the story. As we read our favorites we practice the various skills of readers...

We have begun studying different components of a book. We are leaning about characters, setting, and sequence. We answer questions, that you too can ask as you read at home: Who are the characters in the story? Who is the main character? Who is the story mostly about? What is the setting of the book? Where does the story take place? What happens in the beginning, middle and the end? What is the problem? How is the problem solved?

We chose a favorite book and thought about who the characters were in the story. We then drew and labeled a picture of the characters.

family morning meeting!

Thank you to everyone who joined us at our Morning Meeting. It was fun to share how we begin each day with you.

We filled our heart jar!

We voted and chose, by majority, to have a movie and popcorn day. We watched "Maya the Bee" and snacked on popcorn. There were many cries of "this is the best day ever!"

readers workshop

We began reading groups!

We start each group with word work. Currently we are practicing putting our names together as well as our friends' names. As we progress, our names are cut up into more and more letter pieces. We are then challenged to put our names together in correct order from left to right.

We all have at least 2 leveled reading books in our book boxes that we can read (along with familiar storybooks). The leveled readers have a repetitive and predictable pattern typically with a change on the last page, and example would be "I see a dog. I see a cat. I see at mouse. I love animals."

We are practicing using the pictures to help us read the words. We know the pictures match the words. As we read more and more our one to one correspondence (pointing to each word once as we read it) is getting stronger.

During the first six weeks of school we build our classroom community, learn the routines of school and explore our materials/tools we will be using throughout the year. Children's social and emotional needs are directly linked to their abilities to be ready to learn.

heart ambassadors

Each month a couple of us are awarded the title of Heart Ambassador. These students are ones who have exemplified our school's expectations of being Honest, Engaged, Appropriate, Responsible and Timely.

In September...

Baylinh was chosen because he is timely and follows directions the first time.

Ethan was chosen because he is responsible in helping take care of our room.

This month...

Alex was chosen because he is very responsible. He is always quick to help a friend. Alex takes care of his things independently.

Rose was chosen because she displays all the qualities of HEART! She is a great model and a good friend.

Flexible seating

We have even more choices for seating!

We get to choose everyday where we want to sit and with whom we would like to work. We like to move and now we are able to wobble, rock, bounce, stand, lean etc which increases our blood flow allowing us to be more alert and focused. Not having assigned seating also lends itself to making a more close knit community as we share ALL the spaces and spots in the classroom.

science!!!

We learned about the four classic “seasons.” We began our investigation with the question "What will the weather be like on your birthday?" Talking about our own birthdays and the type of weather helped us connect to the cycle of the seasons.

After our discussion we were given a series of drawings and looked for patterns to figure out the seasons’ order. Then we determined what the weather looks like on our birthdays and marked our days on the corresponding season's picture.

You can further encourage your child’s curiosity about the weather by going on a “Season Walk." Go for a walk together and look for clues that help you to know what season it is!

READER's Workshop

We are READERS! There are many ways people read books and we have been practicing all the ways. We can read the pictures. We can retell familiar stories. We can read the words. Readers read for pleasure but also to learn. We shared some things we learned from our nonfiction books with each other this week.

flexible seating!

We began our flexible seating in our classroom this week. We now have 5 stools to choose from. We modeled and discussed the expectations of what it looks like to have the privilege to sit on a stool. Each day a student collects our name tags during breakfast. Then, in a random order, students can choose a new table spot for the day. Flexible seating allows your child to consider how he/she is feeling and then choose a spot which will be best fo his/her learning that day.

Math

Shapes... and Number talks...

We have been doing a lot of partner talk to learn about shapes. We explain our thinking and how we know. "I think....I know because...." We work to justify our thinking giving us a deeper and more meaningful understanding of the math content.

reader's workshop

we are readers!!!

This week we all became readers! We are able to read many of the books in our "Favorites Bin". Readers like to read their Favorites over and over again. Often readers read these books so much that they know the story by heart. There is more than one way to read a book---some readers read the words and others read the pictures.

We read with partners this week and did an amazing job following ALL the expectations of partner reading. Partners sit side by side and have one book in the middle and talk about what they are reading, read the pictures together, and read the words together.

After we came together on the rug and shared our favorite pages from the books we had read.

We met our 5th grade buddies on Wednesday. It was fun to play together and the 5th graders were great role models. The kindergartners made some special connections with the older students. We met our buddies from Saint Michael's. We created animal faces using a variety of foods. Everyone had a good time and enjoyed eating them afterwards.

reader's workshop

We have been doing a lot of reading! We have been reading on our own and with partners. We began reading "old favorites" and have already come to love the books. We are then able to help read and read on our own these books. There are many ways to read a book, one of which is remembering the story. These "old favorites" allow us to be able to read right at the beginning of kindergarten!
