October 6th

***FOR YOUR INFORMATION***

--School begins at 8:00. Before then your child has the choice of coloring inside in Miss Bryan's room or having recess outside. Often my door will be locked until 8:00. If my door is open and I am not there, your child should hang up his/her backpack and then make a choice of Miss Bryan's room or outside.

--Now that we are in full swing of school. Please say your goodbyes to your child quickly. Two of my goals for your child is independence and self reliance. Expecting your child to do his/her morning routine (hanging up backpack, taking off jacket, washing hands, choosing a breakfast, and sitting down to eat) without you is helpful in achieving these goals.

We began the week by sharing our Hopes and Dreams (goals) for Kindergarten with the principal Sara Raabe. You can now see them hanging outside our classroom door.

During Reading Workshop we learned about the many ways to read a book; reading the words, reading the pictures, and retelling the story. We read books with partners and then shared our favorite parts whole group.

The books we read this week during Reading Workshop were donated to us from The Flying Pig Bookstore. We loved all 75 of the books and found many new favorites. On Friday we created a thank you poster to give to the bookstore.

We finished up our first math unit on shapes. We each met with Ms. Bell to talk about and show what we have learned.

We have already begun our next unit on Counting and Cardinality. Our Core Math Ideas for this unit are:

--How do Mathematicians count things?

--How do Mathematicians decide which is more or less?

--What is the relationship between numbers and representations?

Talking with our math partners about how we counted a set. After a few of us shared our math thinking with the whole group.

In Writing Workshop we wrote a story as a whole class. The next day we learned about the different parts of a story; characters, setting, and problem/solution. We each then drew pictures of the characters in our story. Everyone chose to share their illustration on the Smartboard with the Elmo projector.

The weather has been almost summer like. We have been taking advantage of this and having an afternoon recess instead of playing inside at the end of our day.
